Dr. Rohit Varma – Views on Glaucoma

He is a surgeon with subspecialty certification from the National Board of Ophthalmology, an assistant clinical professor at UCLA, and a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS).Rohit Varma, MD is a physician-scientist, board-certified ophthalmologist and glaucoma expert with more than 16 years of clinical and research experience in glaucoma. He is currently Professor of Ophthalmology and Associate Dean for Strategic Research Initiatives and Program Development at the University Of Miami Miller School Of Medicine. His work has been pivotal in identifying important risk factors associated with axonal damage in glaucoma.

Dr. Rohit Varma is chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia and a professor of ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University. He founded the Cornea Service in 1987, chairs the department's research committee and serves on national NIH study sections. He has chaired national committees focused on promoting eye health in underserved populations, training minority researchers and creating programs to address the growth and development of careers for under-represented minorities in academic medicine. Dr. Varma directs a number of federally funded studies relating to eye disorders in racial minorities. After completing his M.D. at the University of Delhi, New Delhi, Rohit Varma completed his post-doctoral fellowship training in Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in collaboration with the Harvard Medical School Department of Ophthalmology.

Early life

Ever since he was a child, Dr. Rohit Varma has been fascinated with the human eye. His curiosity led him to the field of ophthalmology, where he pursued his dream of discovering and creating treatments for diseases that affect vision. Rohit's research led to innovative treatments for a range of visual conditions including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma and age-related vision loss. Dr.Varma is a highly skilled eye surgeon, who pioneered the breakthrough treatment of "Chronic Open-Angle Glaucoma". He perfected the once dangerous "trabeculectomy" procedure, which he helped to develop in the 1970's into today's most effective glaucoma treatment available. A pioneer in developing intraocular lenses (IOLs) for implantation into the eyes of cataract patients, Dr. Varma's innovative IOL designs are now being used on thousands of patients worldwide. He is a co-inventor (and part owner) of the IntraLase femtosecond laser, which uses a laser instead of a blade to create precise incisions in eye tissue during phacoemulsification surgery. Recently, this technology became the first therapeutic laser technology ever approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use during human eye surgery. Rohit Varma has served as Chair of the Board of Directors of USC Care, and President and Chief Executive Officer of USC Health Group. Rohit Varma, MD, Ph.D., FRCSC is Dean of USC's Keck School of Medicine and Elizabeth Travis "Betty" and Charles E. Blake Distinguished Professor and Chair in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Keck School of Medicine. The young ophthalmologist, Dr. Rohit Varma, was returning to his medical college in India after a fellowship in the United States, to take up a position as an endowed chair of ocular research at his home institution. Dr. Varma did his undergraduate and medical school education in India and completed his ophthalmology residency at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. He completed his dermatology fellowship at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia followed by glaucoma fellowships at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia and Keck School of Medicine of USC.
